Ethiopian National Museum

A must see, the Ethiopian National Museum exhibits a replica of Lucy, and much more. With Ethiopian civilization being the oldest of Africa South of the Sahara and in fact among the oldest worldwide, the museum's artifacts span several millenniums, featuring a wide variety of artifacts varying, from clothing to artwork, including modern Ethiopian art.

Red Terror Museum

A testimony to the gruesome horrors committed to humanity by the Derg regime and the infamous famine that resulted from it is shown in the Red Terror Museum. Many of its employees are survivors of the regime and will tell their stories as well.

St George's Cathedral

St George's Cathedral  was built in 1896 to commemorate Ethiopia's victory over the Italians. The circular building may not look impressive on approach, but as you circle the building, you will notice people praying besides the walls making it a living testimony to the Ethiopian Orthodox Church. The interior is colorfully decorated with huge paintings and mosaics and its little museum exhibits ceremonial clothes and ancient manuscripts.

Holy Trinity Cathedral

Once the largest Ethiopian Orthodox Church, the Holy Trinity Cathedral was built to commemorate the country's liberation from the Italians. Many victims killed by the Italians during occupation are buried here, as well as Emperor Haile Selassie's body, which was moved here in 2000.

Mount Entoto

Emperor Menelik II built his palacea and resided in a historical area 1,300 ha mountain resort at 2,600 - 3,100masl, Mount Entoto, just outside of Addis Ababa. When he moved from Ankober, he founded Addis Ababa from this location. It is considered a sacred mountain and has many monasteries. It is also the location of a number of celebrated churches, including Saint Raguel and Saint Mary. The mountain is densely covered by eucalyptus trees that were imported from Australia during the reign of Menelik II, and mostly planted during Emperor Haile Selassie's reign. The forest on the mountain is an important source of firewood for the city.

The greatest souvenirs are sold from little shops in a narrow alley, Souvenir Street, near the Post Office. One finds a great selection of old and new artifacts and art products. A must visit before you head home.

Traditional weddings

On Sundays, many middle class families celebrate their traditional wedding with large drums and dances at the Ghion Hotel, These are frequent events and totally authentic. Just walk into the hotel garden on any Sunday morning and see if one is taking place. Many are fabulous.

With a population of about 4 million inhabitants, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, at an elevation of 2,300masl, is the largest city in the country and growing rapidly; it shares being the seat of the Federal Government of Ethiopia with the second largest city of the country, Dire Dawa in the Oromia Region. There are more than 120 international missions and embassies in Addis Ababa, making the capital one of the primary centers for international diplomacy in Africa. While Amharic is most commonly spoken (70% of the inhabitants), having attracted citizens of so many other regions, many other local languages are spoken as well.

 

Addis is safer than most cities in Africa. Gang violence and similar serious activities are unusual. However, you should always on the alert for pickpockets and con-artists, often young boys.

Addis Ababa has a subtropical highland climate; due to its high elevation - about 2,200masl - it has relatively moderate temperatures for a city in the tropics. November to January is the dry season in Addis Ababa with mild day temperatures of around 23 C (73 F), while it cools down at night. The short rainy season is from February to May, during which their is much less difference between temperatures during the day and night, while light rainfalls may cool the air. The long wet season is from June to mid-September and the temperatures are lower and the sky may be clouded most of the day.

This module facilitates the hub function of the capital with transfers between your hotel and the airport and allows you to see Addis Ababa as well.

Day 1

  1. Arrival at Addis Ababa Bole International Airport, usually in the morning. Visa service and custom clearance may take some time.

  2. Pick up at airport and bring you to your hotel where you can have lunch.

  3. Have a rest in the afternoon. You have been many hours on an airplane, spent some time at the airport clearing customs, to arrive in Addis Ababa at an elevation of 2,300m. We recommend you take some rest in the afternoon. But if you are up to it, we can take you to a museum or to the Ethiopian craft market street. If you came from America, you have changed about 9 - 12 time zones, and spent the night in the air. Nevertheless, try to stay awake until after dinner, so that you adjust your biological clock to the Ethiopian day rhythm.

Day 2

  1. City program, which includes the Ethiopian Ethnological Museum, the National Palace or Jubilee Palace museum, the Holy Trinity Cathedral, the Saint George Cathedral, the Railroad Station and Mount Entoto with the palace of Emperor Menelek II. At night a traditional injera meal.

Last Day at the end of your Ethiopia journey

  1. Depending on the hour of your departure, we organize a visit to the Ethiopian National Museum and the Ethiopian Art and craft shops street.

  2. Transfer from your hotel to the airport.
